Feeling very very weird because some of you who have been here for years may know that I used to keep track of all the crazy shit my Spanish prof. used to say in contrast to my very nice and proper English lit. prof. (who was his partner)... and it is now, having graduated a couple years ago, that I emailed that crazy Spanish prof. not as a student but as we are now... professional acquaintances. And it got me thinking and I said oh fuck.

Hi!!! I’m your local insomniac/gremlin analyst who, you guessed it, does character analysis(insert lego movie song).

I also love theories too, so you’ll be seeing some of those as well(because my brain is evil and gives me way too much to think about).

I go by gremlin online, but i always challenge people to come up with the most creative nickname as possible for the name(surprise me idc).

Anygays, i am famous for having dry af humor and terrible attempts at sarcasm, so if anything i say comes off as rude or blunt, i apologize in advance.

Roommate AU #1

Characters: John Price, Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, John “Soap” MacTavish, Simon “Ghost” Riley, Gary “Roach” Sanderson

Context: For convenience reasons and future things I have planned, you‘ll be sharing this really big house with all of the characters I‘ll write these headcanons for. Why are you sharing this house? Just because I can. I’ll find a better reason later. This also includes Alejandro, Rudy, Graves, König and Horangi. This is kinda like a peaceful AU, where they don‘t work military jobs. This can be read as platonic or romantic, I don‘t really care.

John Price

•He‘s the peace keeper in the household along with Rudy.

•He can‘t go without tea in the morning and it‘s the first thing he does. If you drink tea and are awake just as early, he‘ll also make you a cup.

•Price is only half-awake in the morning, so he‘ll accidentally say yes to the stupidest things, because he isn‘t really paying attention.

•Maybe he could work as a police officer? I'm not sure if I can see him do anything else. Suggestions are greatly appreciated lol.

•I feel like he’d play chess. Or just like. Strategy games altogether. With anyone who’s willing to join :D

•But mainly with Ghost and Alejandro. And König if he’d have the balls to approach Price.

•If you decide to play with him and know the rules of whatever game you’re playing already, it’s no mercy mode.

•If you don’t, or are still learning, he’ll go easy on you.

•He usually can be found in the living room, kitchen or backyard.

•He isn’t home for most of the day, due to his job, but he enjoys having dinner with whoever is available. He obviously favours Gaz and we all know it. That his adopted son after all—

•Also, because he’s an old man, he goes on long walks for no reason

Kyle “Gaz” Garrick

•He’s somewhere in between troublemaker and just kinda chills

•I know this sounds very contradictory, but hear me out.

•He doesn’t get in trouble often, but when he does he’s either having a mischievous day, he’s purposely messing with Price, his dad or the most common option; he’s being dragged along by Soap and Roach.

•Even if he’s being dragged along, he just films whatever bs Roach and Soap are up to though. They need a camera man!

•In the morning he also makes himself a cup of tea, but he’s awake later than Price is. Usually when breakfast is ready already

•He’s a little groggy and sometimes grumpy in the morning. (Soap advice to you when you join the household is to not talk to Gaz before he’s had his breakfast and tea!)

•I can see Gaz spending hours in the bathroom in the morning and he ends up pissing everyone off, especially because Horangi, Alejandro and Soap also take ages in the bathroom

•I’m not sure what he’d work as, but maybe a professional gymnast? Is that what they’re called? Help—

•Or maybe a daycare attendant?

•I think he’d like cooking, so he usually makes dinner and lunch for everyone

•He has two lists; one with everyone’s allergies, likes and dislikes, and one with the meals he makes for dinner for the week

•Sometimes he’s away for a week or two at a time because of tournaments he attends

•He doesn’t mind sharing a bed if you have nightmares, or just enjoy close physical contact altogether. Especially during movies!

John “Soap” MacTavish

•Chaos Gremlin #2

•Usually is the one to drag Gaz along

•His shenanigans usually involve but aren’t limited to: drawing on sleeping people, mixing up salt and sugar, turning off the light in a room where people are, climbing on random shit, hiding people’s stuff & so much more These are all Roach’s idea btw, but you didn’t hear it from me—

•Will happily involve you in his shenanigans as well, you usually don’t have a say lol

•Drinks coffee in the morning, hot chocolate if he’s feeling silly

•He’s upset when people come after him for taking ages in the bathroom, he needs to style his mohawk properly!

•Constantly misplaces his ADHD meds, they mysteriously reappear on his pillow sooner or later

•He has this joking conspiracy, that there is a shadow man cryptid thing or a guardian angel giving him back his meds because no one in the house admits to placing his meds onto his pillow

•Works as either a football coach, PE teacher or freelance artist

•Still has a sketch book full of sketches and full-blown artworks of all kinds of stuff

•Has sketched/drawn every household member at least twice

•Also doesn’t mind physical affection, especially not since he’s pretty touchy himself

•Also definitely mixes different shampoos together lol

Simon “Ghost” Riley

•Is always, and I repeat always the first one awake

•Also drinks tea first thing he wakes up

•Sometimes at ridiculous hours, like, no one needs tea at 2:53 AM! He disagrees

•Knows of Soap’s and Roach’s shenanigans, only watches them… usually, there are times where he does stop them

•You’ll rarely see him around when you first join the household, he doesn’t quite trust you yet He also doesn’t like change. ‘Tism who? He don’t know her—

•The more he gets used to you, the more you’ll see him around

•He likes to tell you his jokes if you happen to be awake around the same time as him, it’s a bonding experience!

•He works as a dog sitter or a bodyguard. There is no in between. I do heavily lean towards dog sitter though

•Don’t touch him

•Unless he explicitly tells you it’s okay, that is

•Accidentally gives the worst side-eyes in history

•He is the shadow man cryptid/guardian ‘angel’

Gary “Roach” Sanderson

•Chaos Gremlin #1

•No one out-gremlins him

•Don’t even try, you will fail

•I was thinking Party Planner, but my friend came up with Entomologist

•So, he’ll do party planning as a hobby because I can’t let go of that headcanon.

•90% of the parties he plans are insect themed birthday parties

•He also has a few pet bugs and Rudy hates all of them

•Also, all of the shenanigan ideas are his

•Usually can be found in trees in the backyard or in a random bush somewhere in the neighborhood

•If you don’t speak BSL or ASL, he’ll start carrying a notebook and a pen around for you

•Randomly stands in a corner of your room at night and T-poses because he thinks it’s hilarious

•He’s like an outdoor cat, he sometimes isn’t home for a few days but he always comes back home at some point

•Roach is also sometimes outside all day long and only comes back for dinner

I had this one funny concept for a Magnus Archives AU that basically had Jon just constantly being pulled out of the main-character role, so stuff always STARTS to happen, but then it never actually WORKS, and I just thought of a very funny addition to it, so I'm sharing it again-

-At some point, Jon has a bit of a stress-induced breakdown at university and just drops out. Even though they aren't dating anymore, Georgie offers him a place to stay while he kind of tries to sort himself out, and he just. Stays. It's fine

-As a result, Jon is much less pretentious, but a LOT more blunt. He just doesn't keep any of his weird thoughts to himself, and has no inclination to keep up a "professional" appearance. Thus, Georgie gets gremlin-Jon as her roommate. It's fine

-Georgie eventually meets Melanie, and they collaborate on a few projects regarding various supernatural topics. Because Jon is just THERE, he always winds up heckling Melanie about her "spooky show". While it is annoying to hear them argue, Georgie notices that Jon and Melanie ironically motivate each other when it comes to research

-Melanie invites/dares Jon to come with her on a few investigation trips. Spooky stuff keeps trying to kill Jon, he's like a magnet for this stuff, but also nothing ever manages to kill him. He and Melanie work together more, having this weird antagonistic-rivalry thing going on as they explore creepy areas, and film monsters trying to bite off Jon's head. Then they both go back to Georgie's apartment, where Jon cooks everybody dinner. This is actually sort of nice???

-Georgie and Jon eventually visit the Magnus Institute, for spooky reasons, and learn about the recently missing Archivist, while meeting the "temporary research team"; Martin, Tim, and Sasha. They're all a little unorganized, but willing to help answer questions if they can. Jon has ZERO hesitation or humility, just flat-out telling Elias he's weird, and also telling Martin "You look like the human personification of a classical painting of a sky full of clouds in soft morning light. Where's the bathroom?"

-Elias is silently losing his mind, because this rude little man is practically RADIOACTIVE with fear-marks, but Jon has no interest working here, and even if he did, Jon doesn't have the "qualifications" for being an Archivist (not that it really matters, but for the farce of legality, it would help). Martin is perpetually flustered, because he truly can't tell is Jon is flirting with him or not (to be fair, Jon isn't sure either. he's not gonna stop, though)

-Georgie comes along at some point to see the library, and Elias is BAFFLED by her; she has almost as many marks as Jon, but somehow feels "blank" when he tries to SEE what caused any of these fears (he doesn't understand she is incapable of feeling fear like that). Well, Georgie sure has the qualifications for the Archivist position! Elias offers her enough money for her to take the job, and as a bonus (for Elias... or so he thinks), Jon helps her record/catalogue various statements

-Georgie keeps being a wrench in the works. Nothing bad happens to Sasha. The very first day Martin doesn't come in for work, Georgie asks Jon to go check on him, he sees the worms, tells Georgie, who makes up a more believable lie to get some rescue people over there, and Jane Prentiss is dealt with right away. Martin doesn't get trapped in his apartment for days and days. Georgie saves everybody from the Circus shenanigans. It goes on like that. Occasionally, Elias will call somebody like Peter to try and scare people, but Georgie keeps fixing it, and Jon keeps being a fear-magnet who also won't die (Elias is most sincerely pissed-off)

-Also, because Martin's apartment still got all gross, Georgie and Jon invite him over to stay until he finds a new space. Martin still isn't sure if Jon is flirting with him, but he kinda likes being doted on... (at this point, yes, Jon approaching him with romantic intent. He doesn't change anything about his behavior, so to Martin, there is no difference. It might not be clear until Jon asks what Martin wants to do for their 6 month anniversary)

aha,,, I had this really in-depth thing I wrote about how much I like your art,,, and the first half, maybe even first 2/3 got deleted,,, I was so excited writing it, I have no idea what it all even contained anymore,,,

So... the first paragraph after this here is rewritten from what I could remember writing the first time. I know it's not as in-depth as it originally was. Hopefully it still gets the depth of what I want to say across... The second paragraph is what DIDN'T get deleted. Aaaa

I only just recently found you and started following you, but I have to say, your art and comics and writing for the ASL brothers is just. So unbelievably good. You're up there in my favorites. Top three. Top two even. The way you write them is like watching a group of close friends interacting in real life, down to the silliness and shenanigans and inside jokes and abrupt changes in topic or mood in a conversation, including superficial changes (one that comes to mind is when Ace goes something like "I'll bet ONE MILLION DOLLARS" or some incredibly large number, really intensely suddenly, in response to Luffy's saying he'd be $20 or something, and then there's a beat, and then Luffy is like "$20 is fine :)" and Ace is just like "Alright :)". That kind of thing is something Ive had happen, something I've seen happen to others... but I've never seen it written/drawn so well.) Everything about their interactions is so incredibly natural, so full of life. Every time I read one of your comics I'm in constantly in awe and taking mental notes. Well. Okay, no, that's a lie. I WISH I were taking mental notes, but I get so caught up reading because it flows SO smoothly that I forget to.

And that's another thing!! How the way you do paneling and story beats in your comics makes reading while also visualizing movement and transitions so seamless. It's like, the visual-narrative equivalent of a hot knife through butter. I've read plenty of comics-- from novice to professional-- that have really clunky paneling and/or pacing. And similarly, I've read as many that let you read everything easily, but it's like, TOO easy, and there's no weight drawing your eyes to the actual art or keeping them there. And I've seen comics that are somewhere between these two, but still don't feel like they have a good flow. (All this as passive observation, I'm not one to actively look to critique something.) Anyway, what I'm saying is, the way you set up your comics-- the art, the paneling, the pacing, the speech bubbles, the shots, EVERYTHING-- makes them just. MM!! An absolute frickin delight to read. And it's combined with some of the best, most natural-feeling writing I've ever had the pleasure of reading. You balance everything so well. In this age of being desensitized to humor online, I must say, the silliness in parts of the Water Is Thicker Than Blood comic make me genuinely grin and even laugh to myself alone in my room. It feels so real, so genuine, so... I'm running out of words. I'm sorry. I just... REALLY love how you make stuff. I want you to know that I'm a big fan, and, even though I'm older than you I'm learning a lot, and your stuff is so well-done. I hope this isn't too strange, aha... if it is, I apologize. I got a little intense

Thank you for enjoying how i depict them! I really enjoy drawing them as realistic as i can. I really want people to understand them how i do in my head, and im glad it comes off perfectly because i love these little gremlins! And it really is surprisingly easy to think up situations of them being little dumbasses together :) just put them in situations, think about the ways any normal person could possibly react to the information thats given, scrap all that, use the outlier, and bam! That’s a bonafide ASL dynamic right there!

Thats really nice of you to say how you like how i panel my comics because thats one of the things im a bit self conscious of, truthfully. My formatting isnt as neat or polished as other comics are, and i really dont care to change that, but its nice to know that there is still charm and interest in my style of comics.

I get what you mean with the being desensitized to humor online nowadays. Idk what about it but its kinda hard to get me to full on laugh at memes like i used to. But i really enjoy putting in gags that i think and I chuckle to myself about for a while after i thought of it. The “that doesnt taste anything like ass” gag got me chuckling for so long to myself while i was at work. Just like,,, the shock and awe that Sabo is in from having witnessed that is so funny to me, i dont think that gag will ever get old in my head.

That’s really cool that me just goofing around can be a learning opportunity to people :0 ive never even considered that could be the case

I'm like in love with all my Peters, but Peter 2 is lowkey my *favorite* (he was my original just like Andrew, and like, we're both 83 babies so like... samesies!) And oh. I love Peter 3 (Andrew) for Spideypool. And I wouldn't be super invested in Tom's Spidey if it weren't for fandom content and behind the scenes shenanigans but he seems like a sweetie, I just need to break away from teenage Spidey (which he wasn't a teen during filming!) So like I enjoy the chaos gremlin sweetie pie energy I've gotten from him and I've just carried it forward a couple years, when people leave you on your own more but at the same time underestimate you about some things.

I've decided that Strange is the one who is ultimately responsible for the extra spideys being yanked out of their universes, cards in the air as to if this is at all *why* they got blipped (anchor beings?), and that he picks Peter 2 to softball a confession and my guy Dr Parker is like "oh you thought" and calls him out, nice and professional.

I will post the scene soon haha I wanna chance to reread and edit a bit

EXACTLY!!! like ik the (boring) answer as to why we weren't shown the learning curve was ANIME but his parents are genuinely so weird and extra and THIEVES THEMSELVES I'm 1000% certain that the answer was HIGH-OCTANE CHILDHOOD like...look at bby kaito...in one (1) panel w Toichi and already popping up right in front of his Professional ThiefTM dad without Toichi realizing, what a menace, I love him.

About Toichi though...... I would ALSO have wanted to see THAT learning process and I'm kinda bitter it was never mentioned actually. gimme the Chikage training Toichi montage!!! like, weird penchant for standing inside tower exhibits in the dark and memorizing laser grids to impress ladythieves aside, as far as we know he was just a weird little magician man who suddenly decided to become a thief, and while his being an escape artist would have useful applications on his budding career as a thief there are lotssss of things being a magician doesn't cover. Plus it was Chikage who was known as the Woman of Twenty Faces! why did they suddenly make TOICHI the expert in disguise who taught Vineyard and Yukiko! like yeah I buy Chikage being gleefully retired (izumi curtis "I'm a housewife!" vibes but like gleeful instead of menacing) until Toichi's death but like...waste of potential man...at least a mention abt her teaching Toichi would be nice...........

Miss Owl. Miss Owl do you have some more headcanons for Din being especially rough, almost mean with Luke, before realising he's a great person and having to grovel back into his life ?

Anon, you know what I like! Just ugh, even before I fell into the pit of manhwas, I've enjoyed the "oh i hate them" to "oh no, I love them" and need to get things figured out and made up for and the groveling and if the one they did wrong was hurt and they lose their mind *chef's kiss* just golden

So, Din can be a bit of an unfriendly and very guarded guy. He tries to be cold but professionally polite and stand-off-ish most of the time until someone wins him over--sometimes this is instant, sometimes it's just unusual circumstances, or sometimes it takes a while...the issue comes when he has a pre-disposed notion of dislike. He can be downright mean. And if he feels you have done him or, especially, those he cares for wrong then he is nasty.

In this, maybe he misunderstood that Ahsoka was speaking for Luke to get lost and not get close to Grogu (which we all know he wouldn't have--why she did that is just BS) or maybe thinks that Luke abandoned him across the galaxy in a ship alone (which made no sense so there has to be an actual reason happening; either danger was coming or he couldn't take Grogu and the feral gremlin stole the x-wing with the feral Artoo or tricked Luke) or just something else...either way, he thinks Luke is not a good person who has done him and Grogu wrong and is in no way interested in being friends.

Well, too bad. Now they have to be in close contact with each other and do like some mission or something similar and Din is not happy. He makes it clear, being pretty honest, he doesn't want to know about Luke. he doesn't care about him or his past or anything. He's just a Jedi who is closer to an enemy than a friend.

Of course, shenanigans happen; they get stuck or captured or whatnot and Luke just slowly shows his kindness and warmth but Din won't be fooled.

But it just continues and Din is growing frustrated and hates how he is feeling over someone he should hate and Luke is respectful but friendly and likes to chat and well...he probably snaps at him. So Luke pulls away and is all sad because he really likes Din.

Then more shenanigans and what do you know? There were misunderstandings and quick judgement and harsh tempers and now Din realizes he was wrong and is trying to apologize and Luke is all fine but just not like he was with Din before and Din is really upset because he liked that attention.

Him realizing not only he messed up but that he's head over heels in love with Luke (and who wouldn't be?) and now needs to figure out how to win Luke back...it's so good.

Even better if someone else tries to come in and is attempting to win Luke's heart.

Din wouldn't have dealt with jealousy like this in some time and not over a person. He is just left twitching and furious as Luke has a wall up between them (as Din originally wanted) and this other bastard is getting closer.

He's not about to let this go, though. He is not someone who gives up and Luke was hurt and doing this because of him. He needed to try and make up with him and heal their relationship and try and be together.

He'll woo, he'll plead, he'll be sad (which is true) he's ready to do whatever it takes to win Luke back over and make up for his attitude before.

It's just so good.

Got an idea and I'm interested in seeing what you do with a prompt like this.

FNAF SB is definitely future time, so the digital world implants are actually more common than just private Fazbear Tech. So Gregory already has his own chip (that he uses to play games on mostly) when he gets stuck in the Pizzaplex, and being the little gremlin he is, he hacked it to allow him access to V.A.N.N.I. network and all the shenanigans he can do with it without needing a full mask.

This is a sci-fi sort of AU where implants just exist and are pretty common, and they have a variety of uses, one of which includes using similar “short cuts” as seen through the mask in Ruin. 

The Tormenting of Moon

Moon growled and lunged for Gregory for the fifth time in as many minutes, but Gregory only laughed and, from Moon’s perspective, passed straight through a section of netting on the play structure. Safe on the other side, Gregory cried, “Too slow again!” 

He took off into the twisting halls of colorful plastic and foam, delighting in Moon’s howl of frustration. 

“How are you doing that?” Moon shouted with his raspy, glitchy voice. 

“It’s not my fault if you can’t figure it out!” 

To be fair to Moon, Gregory having an implant wouldn’t be anyone’s first thought. Legally speaking, a person had to be sixteen or older to have a permanent one surgically grafted to their brain stem. And the removable types for anyone younger or those who didn’t want an internal chip were usually in the form of glasses, masks, and visors—none of which Gregory had. 

So, to Gregory, Moon wasn’t an idiot for not catching on. But he was maybe a bit naive and unobservant. The scar on the back of Gregory’s neck wasn’t exactly subtle and neat and professionally done—rather, it was raised and jagged and far bigger than a real doctor would ever make for a chip placement. 

But hey, there was a black market for everything, even if you were only twelve years old. And implants were too handy for Gregory not to make use of.

Switching his perception back and forth between Standard and Network, Gregory wove through the play structure, always keeping well ahead of Moon’s grasping fingers. He’d always enjoyed a challenge, and this was pretty low-stakes for a chase. Like a slightly more intense game of tag. This wasn’t dangerous; it was fun. 

“Missed me, missed me!” he crowed, diving into the opening of a slide. He took the curves at high speed and shot out into the ball pit. Gregory quickly wormed his way to the bottom of the pit and did his best to slither along without making too much of a racket. With his implant, and the upgrades he helped himself to early on in the night, he tapped into the security cameras in the daycare. 

The night vision mode worked perfectly. He switched between views a few times before finding Moon. The animatronic was stalking back and forth along the edge of the ball pit, looking not unlike a cat who had lost its prey. He half expected Moon to dive headfirst into the pit like a fox into snow. 

Deeming himself far enough away from his pursuer, he carefully slinked up to the surface, only just barely poking out. The darkness provided helpful cover, and the obnoxious music masked the quiet rattling of plastic. 

He threw a ball as hard as he could, and a moment later, it clattered loudly on the other side of the pit. The shadow that was Moon ducked toward it, giving Gregory a chance to take up a more defensible position, tucked in a corner. 

And then, because he was an awful child, he carefully started tossing balls over the edge and into the rest of the daycare. They landed near silently on a padded mat and proceeded to roll down it to make quite a mess. Every now and then, he threw another decoy elsewhere in the pit to draw Moon’s attention, as he was currently swimming through the ball pit like a gangly shark. 

This went on for some time, and Gregory had to pause more and more often to smother his laughter into his shirt. 

Finally ready to reap the rewards of his troublemaking, Gregory boosted himself up onto the ledge and loudly declared, “Wow, what a mess!” 

Moon got as far as leaping to his feet in an explosion of plastic balls before he was rendered still and speechless, horrified by the disarray of his daycare. Over a hundred plastic balls lay scattered around the floor.

Y/N is Lupin, Sun is Jigen, Moon is Goemon, Eclipse is Fujiko and Vanessa is Inspector Zenigata!!! Vanny is here too in place of Moneta (who is Zenigata but. He went villain mode for a sec)

Also I’m not good at describing personalities please bear with me</3

Y/N is a wealthy, cunning, master of disguise, violence enjoying thief, stealing mainly for the thrill of it! But they have a heart of gold when it counts! Also goofy, they are goofy!!! They’re also stubborn and reckless. Over confident to the point where it puts other in harms way.

Sun is loyal, caring and easily entertained! But he does have a streak of cynicism. Over all though she’s just as intelligent and sensible! Also more professional than Y/N, but still goofy. He’s slow to anger, but his anger is as powerful as his namesake.

Moon is very prideful, and mostly collected. He feels emotions very strongly, but keeps a fair amount of the extent internally. He’s strict yet compassionate and exceedingly patient. Though, during a mission he can and will lose what composure he has to go gremlin mode (they do out outside of missions too, especially to fuck with Sun (Y/N usually joins Moon in these shenanigans)) He can be overly strict and close minded, things should be done his way, follow what he was taught. Be strictly aligned to tradition. He will exercise what he needs to for that to happen. There have been times where his virtue turns to sin, much to his regret.

Eclipse at his core has a heart of gold, though it’s rarely seen. She is a very cautious character with herself, with her moments of greed and some over-excitement. She’s frivolous and care-free all the same. He’s independent, determined and a trickster. She’ll lie as much as she needs to get where he needs to be, or get what he needs, she uses what she has to an advantage at the cost of having trouble trusting people. He’s not above being a little two-faced either.

Vanessa is clumsy and sensitive, but with a strong heart and resolve. Determined and impulsive, she’s outspoken. Her need for justice is what drives her. She’s calculated and competitive. Her borderline obsession with justice has put strain on her relationships, making her more or less alone. The people she works with admire her determination, her ethics and strength but with her focus on capturing Y/N, she would do anything for that to happen. Even a deal with the devil.

Overall I don’t really have a clear clear story in my head but it’s slowly coming together!

yeah i can see the twins doing Chaotic Nonsense if they streamed. they do weird bullshit like that and play games in ways the developers absolutely DID NOT intend or play really shitty games for fun. they're not GOOD at games and aren't necessarily trying to be, but they're funny to watch. i'm thinking Shenanigans akin to monster factory, but with more Mischief, somehow (and obviously way less professional cuz they're 16).

i think if amity were to put *effort* into entertaining people with her streams, then yea she'd have pretty good vibes. but mostly i see her doing less of that and more just going full gremlin mode, focussing only on winning the games and the stream quality going by the wayside. she's like. speedrunning papa's pizzeria while audibly breathing into the mic of the WORST pair of gas station earbuds, and inventing 4 new swear words when she messes up and only gets the second place world record

So anyway, I read that gay Chinese zombie book. I have not read an actual book since forever and was doomed, when originally writing this, to wait out the arrival of the rest of the series that I've promptly ordered, and you know what? Let's write a review is what.

For the dry tl;dr we are talking about a strong 8.5 for the first volume, and even that is because of display A, me not being interested in 80% of the school flashback chapter, and display B, the kajillions of similar names that get spiced up with the 2-4 fancy titles of the big shots which get used interchangeably as per demand. Not my demands, but probably good manners' which I'm a stranger to. The short bios of people in the front are a blessing if you want to follow who's who early on; obviously, I didn't savor it as if it was some holy scripture, but for the first chapter you also don't even need it.

Speaking of content, this was not something I expected with my main previous information source being random osmosis via internet. In fact, all I knew is that a main character comes back from the dead, there's other dead people, everyone is wearing pretty much traditional clothes and it's allegedly some good gay shit.

But this wasn't much of a preparation. See, that info was out of context mumbo-jumbo, much like what I'm trying to tap together right now to avoid spoilers. This isn't a fantasyfied period piece or a love story despite one of the main characters working a whole ass pine plantation. (Wonder how long it will take Wei Wuxian till the yuan drops, really. Current gayness rating is 3/10 btw as apart from his body having belonged to an outed twenty-something year old and him playing it up for either giggles or strategy, there's not much else to it.) What I'm trying to say is that man, when I bought the paperback seeing it was 50% off for roughly 5 'Murrican bucks I certainly wasn't expecting a supernatural action detective story with an enjoyable cast and a cliffhanger I wanted to punch a wall over. Color me intrigued. But there's another point I'd like to make.

The point being that the book is funny as hell. Of course this doesn't say much as my sense of humor is pretty niche, but I digress.

Wei Wuxian is a feral gremlin. A very professional and kind-hearted one, but a menace nonetheless. The number of times he's willingly done something irresponsible or stupid followed by regret .5 seconds later is on par with the number typos I've found in my translation. Which isn't a whole whole lot, but it's weird it happened as many times as it did. I'd ask how he's still alive, but, y'know…

The straight man to his antics (lol), Lan Wangji, is usually as interesting as a freshly whitened wall but when he isn't he's amazing. Also has the best scene in the whole volume, hands down. I was reassured there's more of the same to come and I'm filled with giddy anticipation because it had me thriving.

The Lan boys are sweethearts, I hope they'll stick around. They have their own little shenanigans and even if you aren't big on them you'll still look forward to their unexpected appearances once you realize that they are an indicator of shit hitting the whirling device and whipping up a whole entire storm in the very foreseeable future.

Wuxian's uh… nephew? I think it's his nephew. (He's called Jin Ling. I recognize it already, but haven't memorized it yet.) He is very punchable but obviously also a kid and I'm starting to worry for him, man. Either way, he has a demonic hellhound. Name's Fairy. Nuff said.

Then this new Xiao dude is fascinating me for a number of reasons, but even if he wasn't he had the funniest line in the book about 5 pages before things became wild and I was slapped across space-time and jail bars on the face with a to be continued.

The fact that this is a longer story that allows you to dwell on and theorize about stuff is also something I greatly appreciate as a One Piece and Homestuck fan. Theory crafting for an ongoing series is half of the fun, really!! (Ok, it's not ongoing, but I'm forced to treat it as such.) How will we get rid of Wen Ning's shackles? What even is he like when conscious? How long will it take for people other than Wei Wuxian's contemporaries to realize who he is? Will he drop the act himself seeing it's only a question of time until the info spreads? How close is Jin Ling to realizing that his uncle was right? Will he turn on Wuxian entirely or is he invested enough to stick around? Will he turn out to be a respectable cultivator later or be sacrificed for an especially tragic plot twist? What about Wei Wuxian's chances of survival in his current position? For that matter, will all the Lan boys live till the very end? Was the blind man pulling the strings all along or was he tricked into the murder and turned to the forbidden arts in desperation?? Are we fighting for our very lives or merely being tested right now?! Either way, the overpowered zombie talisman is nearby, the plot thickens!!!

So much to think about, I love it!

And although the whys and hows of the logistics are a total question mark, since about halfway through the volume, I have been about 80% convinced of who the unalive person we're on a quest to reassemble is. It's low-key worrying for a number of reasons, but whatever. But this is just a theory. A literary theory.

-Um um um idk anymore questions but five is a good number to have so any little random things you wanna add? Character specific? Not?

Hmmmm. Honestly I don’t have a super clear image of them appearance-wise in my head yet, but there are a couple things I’m very fond of from canonical interpretations that I think will carry over. • Leo’s blue is a darker royal blue, and I’m kind of attached to blue-eyed Leo. I’m thinking he’s probably the second-tallest of the group for the earlier half of the main storyline, but it would be really funny if Mikey beat him in height later on. Long mask tails, and he probably has a little pouch or something to put snacks and band-aids and basic pain meds in. • Raph is the second shortest (soon to be surpassed by Mikey) because I adore short Raph. His red is bright, like stop sign red. Covered in bumps and bruises and usually a few band-aids. The reason for Leo’s pouch, honestly. Although I prefer him with longer mask tails, I think he probably has shorter mask tails because they get tattered and torn too easily if they’re longer. Also easier to tuck under a helmet! Knee-pads and elbow pads!! • Donnie is the tallest because as much as I love short Raph I equally love string-bean Donnie. I imagine him with a nice deep blue-undertoned purple, but less saturated than Rise!Donnie’s. Short mask tails. Brown eyes because I also love brown-eyed Donnie. I’m thinking he’s got some specially made gloves that are really durable and really flexible, and he wears them pretty much all the time. Goggles! A couple small burn scars on his hands from when he was younger. He is also the bearer of the tooth gap due to Raph accidentally landing an intentional face-hit during a sparring match. • Mikey is currently the shortest by a couple inches, but he'll be the second tallest when they're older. His orange is a really vibrant punch-you-in-the-face orange, with red undertones. Like an orange sorbet almost? He’s got long mask tails because he wanted to match Leo. Glasses! The idea just popped into my head and I fell in love so that’s cannon now. Burn marks and little nicks from sous-chefing for Splinter pre-glassses. He has a hoodie. Also he definitely inherited 2012 Mikey’s freckles :)

• Leo doesn’t really have any at the beginning of the main storyline, other than meditating and reading non-fiction strategy and martial arts books and practicing in the dojo. When he was younger though he was a down-right enabler and professional tag-along for all of Raph’s chaos gremlin shenanigans, plus he definitely had a SpaceHeroes variant he was obsessed with. After his self-discovery arc he enjoys reading fiction, but he especially enjoys reading comics. He also tries his hand at writing out scripts for a few! And he picks his SpaceHeroes variant back up. • Raph is a chaos gremlin. If it causes trouble without getting anybody hurt and him in actual serious trouble with Splinter (no video games or skateboarding) he’s probably done it. He’s the skateboarder of the group and also the gamer. When he’s not doing any of the above he’s either messing with his little brothers or sparing with Leo in the dojo. • I see my Donnie as more of a tinkerer. He can code and hack if given a really, really good reason to, but he’d rather not and it is definitely not a fast process. He’s much happier sitting in a pile of old appliances from a scrap heap and taking them apart and putting them back together again to learn how they work. So he’s gotten really good with welding and metals and wiring, and he likes making little gadgets and gizmos out of whatever he can get his hands on! Aside from that, he loves reading both fiction and non-fiction, and he enjoys playing video games with Raph. • Mikey is a hobby-hopper, so he's tried a little bit of everything. The things that stayed are being Splinter's sous-chef and baking, sewing (his hoodie, Leo's bag, Donnie's gloves, all their masks as they got older, the odd stuffed animal out of scraps, etc.), and language learning. He wants to travel the world in the future (part of his desire for independence), so he's trying to learn a bunch of languages now since he's got the time. Aside from English he's also fluent in Japanese, which was an easy choice for a second language. But now he's having trouble deciding on a third language because there are so many he really wants to learn, so he's kind doing a few at once until he settles on one.

Yes and no! There's the main sewer tunnel that they take to get to the surface, and then there's a maintenance tunnel with two big pipes inside it that shoots off of the main sewer tunnel. One of the pipes is taking sewage in, and the other is putting it back out, but the tunnel is dry. It leads to the basement of a what was an old sewage treatment facility before it got demolished. The pipes still work, but the filtration system didn't until Donnie was old enough to figure out how to fix it, and when he did he rigged it so the water in their living room would be clean water, so they basically have a pool. They've reinforced the roof and the walls, and the basement is pretty sturdy, so that's their main home. It's got enough rooms that they have a kitchen/dining room, a main living area, a dojo area, Splinter's room, the twins' room, Mikey's room, Donnie's room, and a decently sized storage room. (Donnie's lab is confined to his room and a small corner of the living area, but he does have one of the bigger rooms).

So, yes because they still use the sewer tunnels to get around, no because technically it's the basement of an abandoned building?

4. Ooooh, good question! Probably Donnie, since I'm working out the details about his arc currently, and it's really satisfying for me because I'm coming from watching 2012 season one where Donnie does kinda get treated like he's worth less than the others for having to put more thought into fighting than they do, and then when they actually need him to be him he isn't doing it fast enough/well enough/whatever for their liking. It really bothers me when it happens and I feel like he deserves so much better, so being able to put my Donnie through the same thing and seeing him actually stand up for himself is making me happy :) That said, Leo's a really close second! I love his arc and I love his dynamic with Raph and with Splinter and I love the angst and he's gonna have some really fun angsty points where his arc overlaps with Mikey and Donnie's! Plus he's Leo. I can't not love him to death. I think this is one of those projects where whoever I'm working on at the moment will be my favorite, because I love them all so much! I also adore Raph and how he interacts with his brothers and his growth as he learns what all Leo's been dealing with and that even though he might be telling someone the truth, which he should do, he also should use gentle words. Plus he really truly does love Leo (and the rest of the fam) so so much and he feels things so so deeply that he just doesn't know how to express them all the time. I know the least about Mikey out of all of them, but I'm so excited about his hobbies! I can't wait to start incorporating them into his arc and figuring out the details of his storyline!

• Splinter is fluent in both Japanese and English, just like Mikey. Leo and Donnie are both learning Japanese and are progressing at pretty similar rates. They're not fluent, but they know enough for what they'd need around the lair or on patrol. Raph knows only a few words because he had "more important things to do" (re: throwing waterballoons up at the grates when pedestrians walked over them) so the others have entire conversations in Japanese and he only will pick up a few words here and there. He gets huffy when they do it because he can't eavesdrop. Unfortunately this means they also can't talk about battle plans in Japanese if they want to have any hope of Raph going along with the plan (not that he's likely to anyway)

• Mikey's cat in this iteration is a stuffed kitty he made out of fabric scraps. It's the first project he ever finished, with Splinter's help, and the one that got him interested in sewing.

• So far I haven't figured out a method for vehicles and stuff to be around the lair for the turtles, but after I do they'll probably have a van or something.

• I associate Evelyn, Evelyn by Evelyn Evelyn and Two by Two from Sofia the First with Leo and Raph. Donnie's arc was inspired by Waiting in the Wings from TTS, and he and Leo share Save Myself by Ed Sheeran (albeit replacing the harmful substances with their respective coping mechanisms; tinkering and books for Donnie, meditation and drilling kata for Leo). Mikey has When Will My Life Begin and a portion of his arc was inspired by Dead Mom from Beetlejuice. (Side note: I have no desire to see the musical, but this song is a bop). On a more typical Mikey-esque note, he also has We Like to Party (The Vengabus) by the Vengaboys

Danny stays on as Tim's older brother, and starts "haunting" the manor whenever the Drakes come home. They stay less frequently - both because of the haunting but also because of their work getting busier - but Tim excited to spend time with his older brother doesn't seem to care as much anymore; besides the "hauntings" are a joke that both the kids are in on. When the Drakes die, Danny and Tim decide staying at the manor makes sense since nothing has really changed for them. Everything is automated for delivery, there hasn't been a nanny or housekeeper as such for years, and the cleaning crew swings by once a week. Food gets dropped off on Sundays by some delivery service, and the cards that Tim has can buy anything else they might need.

So nothing really changes until Bruce shows up. Tim, full grown chaotic gremlin who has dabbled in magic and learnt how to piece together weird mysteries knows who Bruce is. Danny, ghostly being, alternate version of Tim, and Professional Big Brother, also knows who Bruce is, but only because he got bored one day while Tim was on a field trip and decided to go explore stuff. Neither of them know the other knows.

Bruce (after trying to figure out why there are two kids when there was only one kid???) offers to let them both stay at his place until a guardian can be found. The kids refuse saying that they kinda like their independence, plus they're used to being on their own anyways. Any cajoling Bruce tries hits a dead end. He finally managed to convince them that they should at least come over for meals.

At this point, Tim and Danny wander off a ways to whisper amongst themselves. Tim and Danny both reveal that they know something about Bruce that he's not a bad guy, even if he's rich and genuinely cares about people. But they still like being on their own.

So a plan is hatched. They'll try and keep to just the meals for now, while Danny being "older" organises paperwork for himself in this universe. They'll use Bruce's Batcomputer if necessary. Within a few months once Danny "turns" 18 he can take custody of Tim, and life can go back to normal, or their version of normal anyway.

Then, a few months pass, Danny and Tim are living full time at Wayne Manor by this point, and are basically chaotic gremlins who've pulled Jason and Dick into their Shenanigans and Pranks. Constantine happens to drop by for some case and nearly has a heart attack when he sees the kids running through one of the hallways because WHY IS THE GHOST KING LIVING IN YOUR HOUSE? WHAT DO YOU MEAN HES YOUR KID AND THE OTHER ONE'S BROTHER? WHEN DID THE GHOST KING GET A MAGE FOR A BROTHER?

Suffice it to say, Bruce needs to revise his opinion on his kids.

Prompt 02: Tim’s Birthday Present

Tim sat in his empty house at the empty dining table. The table was actually quite large; it had enough seats to sit at least 15 people. But there was just Tim there. 

His parents had promised and sworn up and down that they would come back in time for his birthday. He had everything planned out. He picked out the birthday cake, put on the candles, decorated, ordered his parents' favorite foods, his parents' favorite movie for movie night, popcorn the likes. But that morning, just when Tim was double checking to make sure everything was ready for the most perfect birthday ever, his parents had called to tell him that something really important had come up, and they wouldn’t be able to make it. Tim figured it was better than last year, at least they called this time. 

Tim stared down at the cake, the candles lit. He had heard online that people would make wishes on their birthday cake and blow it out. Tim thought that was a weird thing to do, but it wouldn’t hurt to try. 

What should he wish for? It would have to be something special that he doesn’t already have. Tim thought for a long moment, the candles bleeding into the frosting of the cake. 

A brother. 

Tim closed his eyes and put his hands together like he’s seen the other children to do in the cartoons. And Tim wished for a big brother. When he finally wished hard enough (whatever that meant) he opened his eyes and blew out what was left of the candles. 

Tim waited. What exactly was he supposed to do now? In the cartoons, everyone would celebrate and cheer and the birthday boy would open his presents. There wasn’t anyone to cheer for Tim, or any presents for him to open. 

Suddenly the house shook, and the loud sound of a crash sound came from the backyard. Quickly, Tim did the sensible thing and go check out what the noise was. That's what the characters always did in horror movies. 

In Tim’s backyard, there was what looked like a weird space ship that had crashed into his backyard. There wasn’t any fire or anything, but the spaceship looked pretty wrecked. Getting closer, Tim could vaguely make out that someone was inside the spaceship. Looking around, he saw what looked like maybe the handle. Tim couldn’t really tell. 

When Tim put his hand on it and tried to open it, something poked out mechanically and pricked his finger. He flinched back instinctively, caressing his finger tip.

“Recognized: Danny Fenton. System Override.” A robotic lady spoke. Who is Danny Fenton? As if to answer him, the space ship opened its hatch, and inside was an unconscious black haired teenager. “System Malfunctioning. Please Assis-” The robotic voice spoke again, before getting cut off as if the power had died. 

Suddenly, Tim remembered his wish. A big brother. 

This was Danny Fenton, and he was supposed to be Tim’s big brother

When Danny woke up, he found himself in a very soft plush something. Something that definitely wasn’t the Spector Speeder. Alarmed, he sat up quickly to find that he didn’t recognize where he was at all. He also didn’t recognize the weird kid that was staging at him from two feet away. 

“Hi, I’m Tim. Timothy Drake.” The boy introduced himself almost business like. 

“Uh, hi Tim.” Danny responded awkwardly. “You got any idea where I am?” Danny sat up properly, moving the blanket (?) off of him and turned to face the weird and kinda creepy kid. 

“You’re in Drake Manor. Which is where I live.” He answered again. 

“Ok…ay” Danny nodded thoughtfully. “Any idea how I got here?” Truthfully, Danny hadn’t really been expecting an answer, but he still got one. 

“Because I made a birthday wish to have a big brother.” He answered in the same way he had answered the other question, very matter-of-factly. 

“Ok- Wait. What?” Danny asked, doing a double take at Tim. 

“You’re supposed to be my big brother, right?” Tim was starting to look a little hesitant, and as weirded out as Danny felt he couldn’t help but feel bad about the whole situation. 

“Where are your parents, Tim?” 

“There not home, because they had really important things to do for work.” 

Danny nodded. “Do you know when they’ll be back?” 

Tim shook his head. “They were supposed to come back today, because it’s my birthday. But they said they couldn’t make it.” 

Well, shit. Didn’t that sound awfully like Danny’s birthdays before he had given up on his parents showing up. At least he had Jazz. This kid looked like he was alone. 

Not liking the silence, Tim started fidgeting again. “So, are you gonna be my brother, then?” 

And what was Danny supposed to say, No? Besides, if he was really causing problems being in this random universe, then Clockwork would figure it out. 

Bonus: 

Danny sat at Tim’s dinner table, the kid looking at him radiating in excitement, each with a plate of stupid expensive pasta in front of them. “You said your name was Tim, right?” Danny started thoughtfully. Tim nodded, drinking up everything Danny said. “Well, first course of action as you, big brother. I need to give you a nickname.” 

Tim’s eyes sparkled at the prospect. “Like what?”

Danny tapped his chin exaggeratedly, “Hm… Tim, Tim.” Turing the name around while he absentmindedly twirled his fork between his fingers, Danny wondered what he should come up with. Suddenly, in a misplaced strength, Danny’s fork flew out of his hand. 

Before Danny could even say anything, “I’ll get you a new one!” Tim offered quickly. Getting up from his chair, his foot got tangled behind the leg of the chair and Tim fell quietly on the floor with an oof. 

Danny laughed at him. “You okay, Timbers?” He asked, getting up to check on the boy. 

“Yeah, I like Timbers.” Tim said, a bright smile on his face despite the blossoming bruise on his arm.
